Ina B. Forbus Papers (#4763)

Ina Bell Forbus (d. 1994) was an award-winning Scottish-born author of children's books who lived in Durham, N.C., beginning in 1935. Her books include (1956), (1958), (with Louis L. Vine, 1961), Melissa (1962), and (1965). Forbus also wrote numerous short stories and poems, many of which were inspired by the rural North Carolina farm she shared with her husband, diplomat and hospital administrator Sample B. Forbus. The collection includes correspondence; files relating to her literary career and other interests; manuscripts of books, poems, short stories, and other writings; inscribed copies of books; clippings of reviews of Forbus's work and stories about her; photographs; and other items relating to Ina B. Ina B. Forbus was born in Scotland and moved to the United States when she was a child. She became a citizen upon her marriage to Sample Forbus in 1931. Forbus attended the University of Rochester and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. In 1935 she and her husband bought an old grist mill on Cane Creek and converted it into a summer home. Mrs. Forbus often used the grist mill as a setting for her stories.
